GENEVA: The World Health Organisation on Friday recommended that children over 12 should wear masks in the same contexts as adults in the bid to rein in the Covid-19 pandemic.

The UN health agency, in cooperation with Unicef, published fresh guidance on Friday on when it is appropriate for children to wear masks to impede the spread of the coronavirus crisis.

The two UN agencies had convened a group of experts to review the limited data available on children's contribution to the spread of Covid-19, as well as on the benefits of mask-wearing by children.

Based on those findings, as well as considerations surrounding children's developmental needs, they said the advice varied in different age groups.

WHO thus recommends that "children aged 12 and over should wear a mask under the same conditions as adults, in particular when they cannot guarantee at least a one-metre distance from others and there is widespread transmission in the area."

What is financial literacy?PETALING JAYA: Financial literacy is vital for young people to better manage their financial resources, say experts.

Associated Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry Malaysia socio-economic research centre executive director Lee Heng Guie (pic) said: “Financial literacy allows individuals to better understand and maximise their financial resources.

“They must be equipped with the knowledge and skills that are needed to manage money effectively.

“Without proper planning of your financials in terms of commitment and how you use your money, your personal finances will eventually be impacted, ” he said when contacted yesterday.

“It is important that financial literacy is taught from young, when they are still in school, ” Lee said, adding that it was crucial to give young people a better understanding of the responsibility of managing their finances.

To impart greater awareness on the subject, the Malaysian Financial Planning Council (MFPC) will be organising a virtual financial literacy programme in an effort to help youths acquire basic knowledge on financial management.

MFPC said the four-hour “My Money and Me” programme would help youths make better decisions, noting that data had indicated that Malaysian youths generally lack successful money management knowledge.

SHAH ALAM - Sungai Klang disasarkan untuk menjadi antara sumber bekalan air bagi kegunaan rakyat Selangor pada masa hadapan, kata Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

Beliau berkata, buat masa ini, sumber air bagi kegunaan rakyat di negeri ini hanya dibekalkan daripada Sungai Selangor dan Sungai Langat.

"Kerajaan negeri membuat perancangan ini selepas kita berjaya meningkatkan kualiti air Sungai Klang daripada tahap empat ke tahap tiga menerusi Projek Gerbang Maritim Selangor (SMG). Jumlah sampah yang dikutip di sungai ini juga dapat dikurangkan kepada empat tan berbanding 10 tan sehari.

"Rancangan untuk memanfaatkan Sungai Klang sebagai sumber air ini juga telah kita bawa ke peringkat Kementerian Alam Sekitar dan Air. Sebarang usaha termasuk pembinaan Loji Rawatan Air (LRA) Sungai Rasau akan diumumkan semasa pembentangan Belanjawan Selangor 2021," katanya pada sidang akhbar sempena sambutan Hari Sungai Sedunia Peringkat Selangor di sini hari ini.

Tambah Amirudin, jika rancangan berkenaan berjaya direalisasikan, Sungai Klang dijangka mampu membekalkan sebanyak 1,000 juta liter air sehari (MLD) bagi kegunaan penduduk di negeri ini.

KUALA LUMPUR: Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) is offering a special incentive to encourage commercial customers to light up their buildings and surrounding areas with decorative lighting in conjunction with the 63rd National Day.

The incentive, which started in 2000, is offered to commercial customers under the B, C1 and C2 tariffs who have been in operations for at least one year (before Aug 1, 2019).

"They will enjoy the incentive for a period of two months, from August to September 2020. However, it will only be reflected in the October 2020 bill for those who are eligible.

"Buildings included under the incentive are skyscrapers, office buildings, commercial complexes, shopping complexes, hotels, and gas stations," TNB said in a statement.

The incentive rate is at 20.8 sen/kWh (tariff rate for neon and floodlight) for any increase in electricity usage exceeding the average usage recorded for three months from May, June and July 2020.

"Kita memberi jaminan bahawa aplikasi MySejahtera ini kita lindungi di bawah Akta Perlindungan Data Peribadi 2010.

"Kita tidak sewenang-wenangnya untuk mendedahkan maklumat yang berada di bawah rekod MySejahtera yang digunakan oleh pihak Polis Diraja Malaysia (PDRM) dan Kementerian Kesihatan.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 — Retailers may be fined up to RM500,000 for selling three-ply surgical face masks above RM1 once the price ceiling takes effect Saturday, said Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi said.

The fine was derived from the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 that also provided for compounds of up to RM250,000 per offence.

Individuals committing the offence could be compounded up to RM50,000 per offence or imprisoned up to three years and given a maximum fine of RM100,000 if convicted, he added.

The minister also warned retailers and individual sellers against attempting to circumvent the ceiling by masking their prices.

“For individuals who fail to display the price of the controlled item, they can be fined up to RM50,000 or compounded up to RM25,000, while companies can be fined up to RM100,000 or compounded up to RM50,000,” he told reporters during a press conference at the Parliament building here today.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 — The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) today urged Finance Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz to state unequivocally that banks may not accrue or compound interest charges on borrowers benefiting from the extension of the repayment moratorium.

In a statement today, MTUC secretary-general J. Solomon said that when the initial six-month blanket moratorium was introduced, banks initially remained silent on the accrual of interest on unpaid installments and only said they would not compound these after public complaints.

“Only after persistent calls by various organisations, including MTUC, did the government intervene to ensure that banks did not charge compound interests to those who opted for the moratorium.

“Now that the three-month moratorium is specifically targeted to those badly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, the government has the moral responsibility to ensure that there will be no additional charges by banks,” he said.

Solomon said the zero additional chargers to borrowers must be spelled out clearly in banks’ application forms and any newly revised loan agreements signed by the borrowers with the banks.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 — The new maximum retail price of RM1 per unit that three-ply face masks can be sold for in Malaysia will kick in this Saturday (August 15), the latest government gazette this week has confirmed.

In an order published on August 11, Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi gave his approval for the new wholesale and retail prices for three-ply face masks in Malaysia.

The maximum retail price is RM1 per unit or RM50 per box, while the maximum wholesale price is RM0.95 per unit or RM47.50 per box.

This order applies to three-ply face masks — whether surgical or medical — that are worn either by ear loop, head loop or head tie-on.

This order, known as the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering (Determination of Maximum Price) (No. 2) (Amendment) (No. 2) Order 2020, was made by price controller Datuk Seri Hasnol Zam Zam Ahmad on August 10, with the approval of Alexander Nanta on the same day.
