The Star - Famous nasi kandar outlet ordered to close

GEORGE TOWN: A famous nasi kandar shop along the heritage enclave in Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling was shut down by Penang Island City Council (MBPP) after rats and cockroach droppings were found in the premises.

The outlet, which always has a long queue at night, was shut down by MBPP on Wednesday (Jan 8) around 8pm during an inspection on food outlets in George Town.

Saban hari penipu siber atau lebih dikenali sebagai scammer semakin pintar dalam menipu para pengguna yang naif. Para pengguna bagaikan dipukau oleh para scammer dengan begitu mudah. Scammer kini menggunakan kaedah yang lebih canggih seperti menggunakan peralatan elektronik yang lebih sofistikated  untuk mendapatkan maklumat peribadi  mangsa  dan seterusnya memperdayakan mereka tanpa disedari oleh mangsa.Kebelakangan ini, mangsa scam ini merangkumi pelbagai golongan masyarakat, bukan sekadar pesara tetapi juga profesional, penghibur dan sebagainya. Pasti  ada ramai lagi yang sudah diperdaya namun mereka tidak melaporkan kepada pihak berkuasa kerana bimbang akan keselamatan mereka atau malu untuk melaporkannya. Ada juga mangsa yang tidak mahu melaporkan kepada pihak polis kerana bimbang mereka akan dihadapkan ke muka pengadilan oleh pihak berkuasa tertentu.

Menurut Pengarah Jabatan Siasatan Jenayah Komersil (JSJK), Datuk Seri Mohd Zakaria, para mangsa kehilangan sejumlah RM2 bilion setiap tahun kepada para scammer. Penipuan ini melibatkan pelbagai scam. Sebanyak 5123 kes telah dilaporkan kepada pihak polis. Salah satu punca utama penipuan ini adalah kebocoran  data peribadi. Kebocoran data peribadi ini mungkin disebabkan data tersebut dijual oleh pihak kedua atau ketiga. Namun ada juga data yang didedahkan oleh para mangsa itu sendiri.  Ramai orang yang mendedahkan data peribadi mereka dalam media sosial seperti Facebook atau Instagram. Misalnya, gambar peribadi, nombor kad pengenalan, gambar rumah, gambar percutian, nombor kereta, tarikh lahir dan sebagainya. Data-data ini boleh digunakan oleh para scammer untuk tujuan menipu.Di Pusat Khidmat Aduan Pengguna Nasional (NCCC), kami ada menerima banyak aduan. Ramai yang terjerat dengan Macau Scam, scam pekerjaan, scam cinta dan sebagainya. Kes kes sedemikian, pihak NCCC akan mengarahkan para pengadu supaya melaporkan kepada pihak polis.

FOMCA: Water cuts: Enough is enough! Paul Selvaraj,CEO FOMCA

LETTER| The areas under the Sungai Semenyih plant encompassing USJ, Puchong, Seri Kembangan and Serdang have been severely affected by complete water disruption since Saturday morning. For many residents there this is certainly not the first time. In fact, this is the fifth or sixth time. The suffering that water disruption causes to people has totally been underestimated by policymakers.Activities such as cooking, washing, bathing and drinking are disrupted and when these cuts are unscheduled, the effect is extremely severe especially for big families.

This is made worse when it occurs at or near festive seasons, disrupting celebrations.Additionally, as families are unable to cook at home and seek to purchase food outside, often these shops are closed. There have even been reports that medical procedures were postponed or the patients were directed to go to another hospital because of the unavailability of water. People suffer when there are water cuts. People really suffer.Three days later, the problem has still not been resolved. It was reported that the chief minister informed on Sunday night that the water supply will resume at 11pm, but it proved to be untrue.

Another report said the chief minister informed that the Selangor government expects affected areas to recover by late Sunday night, but again not true.
Residents in some areas were informed that the water truck would arrive at their housing area on Sunday night. It never did. People had waited the whole night with pails outside their homes to collect water. The water truck never arrived; not only had they lost sleep, they never got the water that would have helped in a small way to overcome their suffering.As of this morning, the situation remains the same.

KPDNHEP: Awas harga barang, pastikan bekalan tidak putus keutamaan KPDNHEP

PUTRAJAYA: Selain mengawasi harga barangan, Kementerian Perdagangan Dalam Negeri dan Hal Ehwal Pengguna (KPDNHEP) juga akan memastikan bekalan barangan asas terkawal untuk rakyat seperti petrol, diesel, gula, tepung gandum dan minyak masak sentiasa konsisten dan tidak pernah putus.Berkongsi peranan KPDNHEP bersama Bernama dalam satu temubual baru-baru ini, Ketua Setiausaha kementerian itu Datuk Muez Abd Aziz berkata harga barang sentiasa menjadi keutamaan pengguna namun perihal bekalan barangan sama ada mencukupi atau sebaliknya kurang medapat perhatian.“Kalau bekalan itu tidak ada macamana?" kata Muez ketika melontarkan pandangan mengenai tanggungjawab dan cabaran KPDNHEP untuk memastikan kesejahteraan pengguna dan rakyat.

Berkongsi kaedah bagi memastikan bekalan yang konsisten, dengan memberikan contoh jika stok tepung terputus, Muez berkata KPDNHEP mempunyai kuasa untuk mengimport barangan itu bagi mengatasi masalah tersebut.Berkaitan bekalan minyak petrol pula, stesen minyak yang terputus bekalan atau menutup operasi tanpa memaklumkan kepada KPDNHEP adalah melakukan kesalahan dan boleh dikenakan tindakan di bawah Akta Kawalan Bekalan 1961, di mana boleh dikenakan kompaun atau ditarik lesen operasi, katanya.Muez turut berkongsi usaha mengawal harga dalam menghadapi kenaikan kos sara hidup melalui inisiatif Skim Harga Maksimum Musim Perayaan (SHMMP) yang telah ditambah baik menerusi tempoh pelaksanaannya dipanjangkan pada musim perayaan seperti Hari Raya Aidifitri, Tahun Baru Cina, Deepavali, Krismas, Hari Gawai dan Pesta Kaamatan.

Sisa plastik jadi sumber tenaga baharu

KUALA TERENGGANU - Petronas Chemicals Group Berhad (PCG) berkolaborasi dengan penggiat industri minyak dan gas bagi menawarkan solusi baharu menggunakan teknologi terkini untuk menukar sisa bahan plastik kepada sumber tenaga baharu yang lebih berkualiti dengan pelbagai kegunaan.Pengarah Urusan PCG Berhad, Datuk Sazali Hamzah berkata, jalinan kerjasama dilakukan bersama penggiat industri berpengalaman seperti Plastic Energy Ltd dan Cypark Resources Berhad.“Kita melaksanakan kajian bersama Plastic Energy Ltd untuk membina loji memproses sisa plastik kepada tacoil iaitu bahan mentah yang terhasil daripada pemprosesan sisa plastik.

“Melalui kolaborasi ini, PCG akan menggunakan tacoil yang terhasil daripada loji tersebut sebagai bahan mentah untuk menghasilkan polimer berkualiti di Kompleks Bersepadu Pengerang (PIC) di Johor,” katanya menerusi satu kenyataan hari ini.Selain itu katanya, kerjasama bersama Cypark Resources Berhad menilai potensi kerjasama dalam projek dengan menggunakan semula sisa-sisa yang telah dibuang bagi menghasilkan tenaga baharu termasuk penubuhan loji Waste-to-Energy (WTE) dan penubuhan sistem Pengambilan Semula dan Rawatan Bahan Sisa Pepejal Maju atau Solid-Waste Modular Advanced Recovery and Treatment (SMART) untuk melengkapi penyelesaian WTE dalam meningkatkan pengambilan semula plastik.Beliau berkata, PCG terpanggil untuk mencari penyelesaian apabila pencemaran plastik menjadi satu epidemik bukan sahaja di negara ini bahkan merupakan isu besar di peringkat global.

FOMCA: 'More should be done to curb spam calls', Miss Shabana Naseer Ahmad, NCCC

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians are generally cautious of unknown calls and messages, but increased measures must be taken to prevent them from falling prey to scammers.The National Consumer Complaints Centre’s legal and policy division senior manager Shabana Naseer said concerted efforts were needed to eradicate the menace.“Government agencies, including police and the Malaysian Communications and the Multimedia Commission (MCMC), as well as telecommunication companies (telcos) should work closely in deterring scammers.“Apart from terminating phone numbers used for scamming by MCMC, other measures should be taken to deter them.“The authorities should have a list of those who had registered for phone numbers used for scams. The numbers can be obtained from the police as they are the ones who receive reports by victims.

“Consequently, it will be harder for scammers to register new numbers,” she said, adding that telcos could play a more active role in addressing the problem as part of their corporate social responsibility.She said the public could visit http://ccid.rmp.gov.my/semakmule to check the list of online scammers.Shabana suggested a common complaint platform for the public to lodge reports and urged personal data protection to be strengthened through close cooperation among telcos.Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia’s head of Computer Security and Software Verification Lab, Professor Dr Zarina Shukur, said the government must take action to protect Malaysians from criminal activities.“The government via its ministries should play a part in taking action to combat scam calls and messages. One of the ways to do this is by informing the public about scam operations through religious activities, such as Friday sermons for Muslims.

FOMCA: Urgent Need Regulate Medicine Prices in Malaysia, Dato Dr PaulSelvaraj

Medicines are not a commodity.  Healthcare is a basic consumer right, and a major component of healthcare is the administration of medicines.  Medicines cure people and should never be treated as just another commodity, where pricing and accessibility would be determined by market forces. The Government has a critical role to play to ensure that all consumers, but especially the low and middle income have access to affordable medicines.

A Market Review on the Pharmaceutical Sector was undertaken by the Malaysia Competition Commission. According to the Report, “Malaysian drug prices are high by international standards”. It appears that the pharmaceutical companies in Malaysia are making exorbitant profits by international standards. In another study, it was found that “Malaysia has average higher retail prescription prices compared to Australia due to the lack of pharmaceutical regulation”. Further according to the Pharmaceutical Services Programme, Ministry of Health Malaysia (2018) on Medicines Prices Monitoring Malaysia (2017), wholesale medicine prices in Malaysia are 8 times greater than the International Reference Price (IRP). Further according to the Penang Institute, the median mark-up for originator’ and lowest-priced generics in private hospitals was 51% and 167% respectively.

FOMCA: Raise financial literacy among the young

PETALING JAYA: While the government must take measures to reduce the cost of living, more must be done to raise financial literacy among the young, says the Federation of Malaysian Consumer Association (Fomca).Its CEO Datuk Dr Paul Selvaraj said while the high cost of living and bad money-managing habits both contributed to financial woes, greater effort was needed to help young Malaysians manage their finances better.“Fomca has since 2011 been advocating for stronger policy and initiatives towards empowering young workers and consumers through financial education.“Based on our own survey, we found that many, especially young workers, have very low savings, high credit and not managing their finances responsibly.“Although the government launched the National Strategy for Financial Literacy (2019-2023) programme back in July, I think more needs to be done.

“Because if financial education is not carried out on a major scale reaching the young lower and middle income workers, it will only get worse,” he said when contacted yesterday.Selvaraj’s suggestion for the government to focus on financial literacy programmes matched the policy recommendations by the World Bank, which suggested raising awareness among citizens on their rights, duties and accountability in financial management.Selvaraj said the cost of living had been increasing steeply although the income growth of these workers had stagnated or increased very slightly, with families burdened by financial woes.“We hope the government will take measures to increase their income but at the same time, the cost of living is increasing across all areas. Unless the government does something to help them to manage through these tough times, things will get even tougher,” he said.Creating a repository of financial planning tools which are available online and in local languages is also among the World Bank’s recommendations to address poor financial well-being, higher indebtedness among lower-income households and low savings among Malaysians.

PUTRAJAYA: Kabinet sebulat suara bersetuju untuk memansuhkan kawalan fi perundingan di bawah Akta 586.Menteri Kesihatan, Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, berkata keputusan dibuat selepas perbincangan Mesyuarat Kabinet pada 29 November dan hari ini.“Perbincangan membabitkan cadangan pindaan Jadual Ketujuh, Peraturan-Peraturan Kemudahan Dan Perkhidmatan Jagaan Kesihatan Swasta (Klinik Perubatan Swasta Atau Klinik Pergigian Swasta) 2006 di bawah Akta 586 (Jadual Ketujuh).“Kabinet sudah menilai perkara ini secara holistik dan komprehensif serta mengambil kira saranan Majlis Tindakan Kos Sara Hidup Negara.

“Kabinet juga prihatin terhadap keperluan bagi pindaan Jadual Ketujuh, yang belum pernah dipinda sejak ia mula dikuatkuasa pada 2006.“Pemansuhan kawalan fi perundingan ini membabitkan semua fasiliti berdaftar (Jadual Ketujuh) dan fasiliti berlesen (Jadual Ketiga Belas),” katanya dalam kenyataan hari ini.Tambah beliau, dengan pemansuhan kawalan fi perundingan, pengamal perubatan dan pengamal pergigian swasta akan dapat menentukan kadar fi perundingan yang dikenakan ke atas pesakit mereka.“Pesakit pula boleh menilai dan membuat keputusan awal jika fi perundingan yang ditawarkan adalah berpatutan.“Pemansuhan kawalan fi perundingan ini adalah satu langkah untuk memperkukuhkan lagi kuasa pilihan di tangan rakyat,” katanya.
