Boiling will ensure water is virus free

The water that Malaysians consume originates from surface water sources that have been treated in treatment plants under stringent control and complies with the minimum quality standards set by the Health Ministry as per the guidelines issued by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The physical, chemical and microbiological components of water are checked regularly. Hence, according to the National Water Services Commission, the country's water supply is not only clean and safe to consume directly but is also free of E. coli bacteria. But what about the presence of the Covid-19 virus?

WHO has stated that the virus that causes Covid-19 has not been detected in drinking water. Conventional water treatment methods that use filtration and disinfection, such as those in most municipal drinking water systems, should remove or inactivate the coronavirus that causes Covid-19.

Besides, the risk to water supplies is low as substances added during the treatment process such as chlorine kill the pathogens before they reach the tap.

Although the risk of Covid-19 is low in drinking water and is relatively safe to consume without the need for additional water filtration, there is suspicion on how low is the low.

Different water filters have different functions. Some can make the water taste better, while others filter harmful chemicals or germs. No single filter can keep every type of contaminant out of the drinking water, and as the filter ranges in price, one must be certain of which contaminants to be removed.

Experts: Need for checks on quality of face masks

Details
Created: 09 June 2020

Tuesday, 09 Jun 2020
KUALA LUMPUR: With face masks now widely sold in the country, questions remain on whether they meet the necessary standards to provide protection from Covid-19.

Association of Malaysian Medical Industries secretary-general Datuk Haminnuddin Abd Hamid said if someone chose to wear a face mask, the standard three-ply medical-

grade variety was recommended as it had a bacterial filtration efficiency rate of 95%.

“Non-medical grade face masks trap dust particles only and offer no real protection against viruses, ” he said, adding that face masks used in healthcare facilities such as hospitals must be registered with the Medical Device Authority (MDA) Malaysia, a body under the Health Ministry.

He added, however, that no one was checking the quality of masks sold publicly for use in non-medical settings.

This means poor quality masks that either do not have filters or come with ineffective filters – both of which allow viruses to pass through the mask – may end up being sold to the public.

“The challenge is that even if the public wants good quality three-ply face masks, there will still not be enough, ” Haminnuddin said, adding that two-ply masks did not have filters.

Remembering the World Environment Day

Created: 07 June 2020

In 1972, after the first day of the United Nations Conference on Human Environment, it was decided that there would be a day declared as World Environment Day. Since 1974, World Environment Day has become a global celebration with a common theme of "Only One Earth" to signify the importance of protecting the one and only place we call home.

This initiative also aligns well with our No 13 of our Sustainable Development Goal (SDG), which is climate action. Environment Day is celebrated on annually on June 5 and aims to promote awareness to protect our nature and biodiversity. The theme for the year 2020 is "Biodiversity" with the tagline "Time for Nature". What do we mean by biodiversity?

At its root, biodiversity basically means the variation of all the species from various habitats and terrains. Biodiversity is not a list of plants and animals, but a series of relationships in a complex web. When one part disappears, every other part of this complex chain is affected.

Biodiversity comprises three levels of diversity, which are genetic diversity, species diversity and ecosystem diversity. Thus, it is the foundation for a healthy planet and healthy people. Diverse ecosystems are more resilient and better able to recover from stress such as drought or human-induced habitat encroachment such as over-grazing.

Increase health expenditure to 7pct of GDP, govt told

Details
Created: 05 June 2020

KUALA LUMPUR: The Federation of Malaysian Consumers' Associations (Fomca) is urging the government to look into increasing its health expenditure to 7 per cent of the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Fomca president Datuk Dr Marimuthu Nadason said an increase in spending, better budget management and reduction of corruption and leakages would enhance the public healthcare sector.

He lauded the Health Ministry for their handling of the Covid-19 crisis that was eased by the additional financial support given to them.

Marimuthu however said in normal, pre-Covid times, however, the healthcare system is overburdened and underfunded.

He said 65 per cent of the population used public healthcare services however only 45 per cent of this demographic was served by registered doctors, while 25 per cent of them were served by specialists.

"There is a clearly under-investment in pubic healthcare. Health expenditure is a mere 4.4 per cent of GDP, while the World Health Organisation suggests expenditures of up to 7 per cent of GDP," he said while quoting data made available to Fomca by the Health Ministry.

He said that among the three biggest challenges include the insufficient beds in hospitals which deny patients who need to be warded the urgent medical facilities and services that they are supposed to be provided with.

"This has severe consequences for low income consumers, for if they are unable to get access to public healthcare, are forced to go to private hospitals, which would severely affect their financial wellbeing.

PETALING JAYA: Unregistered daycare centres should make themselves legal by registering before operating, urged Senior Minister (Security) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

He said that illegal daycare centres could not be monitored during the conditional movement control order (MCO) as they had no records with the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry.

"We have given permission for registered taska operators to start reopening and these are centres monitored by the ministry, and their operators are all trained.

"There are also unregistered or illegal taska and we are worried over these type of premises because the operators have no training of any sort and if something bad were to happen, it is out of our knowledge.

"I'm appealing to these operators to register with the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry so that they can get training and any aid allocated for registered centres," he said during his daily briefings on Thursday (June 4).

He said that the standard operating procedures (SOPs) set by the government in allowing registered daycare centres to operate were strict to ensure full compliance and maximum safety of everyone involved.
