Created: 11 January 2019

KUALA LUMPUR: The government has been urged to regulate the cost of private healthcare as part of its efforts to lessen the cost of living.

Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (Fomca) Datuk Dr Paul Selvaraj said the move would also ensure better healthcare quality for all.

He said that was among the five measures suggested by Fomca during a meeting with the Council of Eminent Persons today.

“Currently, private healthcare cost is determined by the market. And we do not know the extent of profits made as well.

“That is why we are urging for the government to intervene by regulating the cost of healthcare, through a nexus with the government sector.”

The other four suggestions made during the meeting with the council touched on transportation, childcare, housing and food.

“We have to look into the overall aspects of the costs involved in the interest of the people’s welfare.”
